We are considering a move to NY state. What area%26#39;s would you all suggest outside of the greater NYC area? We would like a warm, modern community but not the chaos of NYC. Important ammenities would be good schools, museums, theatres, libraries, activities. We prefer to be either by a lake, lg river or ocean.
Not New York City
well,you could move to an area which borders a lake and a River.
Upstate New York NorthWesternmost area ..The lake:Ontairo;

Not New York City
I%26#39;m probably a bit partial but I think Rochester is a great mid-sized city. My husband and I live about 20 miles away in a small town. Just far enough away to be out of the city, but close enough to enjoy it whenever we want. There are great museums in Rochester - the Strong Museum for kids, the RMSC, the Memorial Art Gallery, and the Eastman House are a few. The Auditorium Theater draws national touring broadway shows. And activities - just about anything you%26#39;d like is close by. I believe that a couple of the schools in the area have rated very high in national rankings. And we are near Lake Ontario - as well as being very close to the Finger Lakes. It really is a beautiful area. We do get snow in the winter, but we have the wonderful benefit of having four very different seasons. The downside is the job market. It is getting pretty rough in the area....Kodak and some other local companies have made lots of layoffs. I guess it depends on what your career is as to if that would affect you or not. Hope I%26#39;ve given you some insight. Let me know if you have more questions.
Although it%26#39;s not NY State, New Jersey has some wonderful towns and great school systems. If you like the ocean, we%26#39;ve got some to the greatest shore towns and beaches in the country! The other nice thing about NJ is you%26#39;re between two great cities, NYC and Philadelphia, always plenty of things to do. However, you%26#39;re statement about ';chaos'; of NYC leaves me feeling that you don%26#39;t like NYC that much. Have you visited the City? Most people who come here love it, and want to come back again and again.
Ejan yes I have been to NYC. I was not impressed. While I am a city girl myself, I found NYC far too crowded, dirty and unfriendly. Not only did I feel uncomfortable by the ';scenery'; I felt unsafe. The art scene was amazing but the ';chaos'; that surrounds it was extremely unappealing to me.
Let%26#39;s see - you are going to Virginia, California, and New York........
Take a look at Buffalo/Niagara-
There is only a 40 minute drive between the two lakes and the rest of the area borders the river. The city has all the ammenities-museums,theaters, wonderful architecture, and the suburbs have some of the best school systems in the state. Take a look at the website www.buffalorising.com- Buffalo will suprise you.
I%26#39;m sorry Bud, but is there a reason you are so concerned with my inquiry of different areas? In case you didn%26#39;t pick up on the obvious, we are trying to decide where to move to. Obviously research is what is needed to make a viable choice. That is what makes a site like this so valuable. It allows one to gather information from first hand sources. Perhaps you could concern yourself less with my discussions and concentrate on those pertaining to yourself.
