N.H.L Ice Hockey in New Jersey

Going to watch a game on our trip in March can you suggest the best way to get to the match from our hotel i.e Salisbury

N.H.L Ice Hockey in New Jersey

take subway #1 down to 42nd St;

walk over to Port Authority Bus Terminal at 42nd St and 8th Ave

take NJ Transit bus to Continental Arena at the Meadowlands complex

there are special buses during days with games

N.H.L Ice Hockey in New Jersey

The easiest would be a taxi / hired car. Make sure you book a return and know the precise pickup point. The cheapest would be to to take a bus (#351) from the Port Authority (42nd St and Eighth Avenue).

You could also rent a car and drive. I think that would be a bit cheaper than a taxi. Directions here

rent a car and drive???? to Continental Arena?

There are some places in NJ where having a car is the best option, but I would strongly discourage doing so in this instance.

The Arena is within spitting distance of the Lincoln Tunnel. Not to take public transportation is foolhardy.

I agree with broadwaynyc that you should take public transportation, but disagree with the directions. given. The Salisbury is at 57th and Seventh. The subway station at that corner is not for the #1, but is instead for the N, R, Q, and W trains -- any of which will take you to 42nd Street/Times Square. You can then walk the block over to the bus terminal above ground, or you can walk through the block-long underground passageway to Eighth Avenue and the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

The nearest place you can catch the #1 train from that hotel is 59th Street/Columbus Circle, which is close enough to the hotel -- but if you were at Columbus Circle, why would you take the #1 to go to the Port Authority Bus Terminal? The A and C trains also stop in that station, and they go directly down Eighth Avenue to the Bus Terminal at 42nd Street -- get off the A or the C train, and you are there, with no further walk.

I am a big advocate of public transportation, but whenever we go to a game in the Meadowlands, we drive. It%26#39;s a matter of convenience. It%26#39;s an easy drive. No need to wait for a bus. If you want to leave earlier or later, it%26#39;s not a problem. If you have four guys taking the bus, that is $36 ($40 if you buy it on the bus and don%26#39;t forget to add the $2 it costs to get to the PA) already, so what are you saving?

sorry about the wrong subway info

you could try a car hire or

see whether a yellow cab will charge to take you out to the Meadowlands since there is no chance he will be able to get a fare coming back; do not know if there are taxis that will take you to Manhattan after a game

if you want to rent a car, you%26#39;ll need to be over 21; with the big companies it is 25;

also check when the rental car center closes because if you are going to a night game and you get back from a game later than the rental car center is open, you%26#39;ll need to park your car more money there

the issue about the subway costs is a moot point because you%26#39;re going to have to go to the rental car office anyway unless you%26#39;re planning on getting a rental car from the airport

with public transportation

==========

1. subway to 42nd st

2. bus to Continental Arena

3. watch game

4. bus to PABT

5. subway to hotel

with rental car

===========

1. subway to Hertz, Budget, Avis office

2. car to Continental Arena $6 Lincoln Tunnel

3. watch game

4. car to Hertz, Budget, Avis office

5. subway to hotel

There%26#39;s an Avis at 54th between Sixth %26amp; Seventh. This would be 3 blocks (street blocks, not avenue blocks) from the Salisbury. If you really want to get here by bus, walk to 57th Street and Seventh Avenue, and take the #6 bus 3 blocks downtown.

Hey Guys! Thank you for all that very helpfull info - can I just add to my original question and say that there are actually 15 of us going to the game - does that put a different perspective on the best way to travel?

yeah, the 15 people makes a difference

when posting it is important to put in every bit of info like that

anyway,

with 15 people, you%26#39;ll probably need 3 full-size sedans or 2 big SUVs if renting a car

try calling a car hire but you%26#39;ll need as many cars as with renting a car

if it was me, I would still go with the NJ Transit bus $13 for each person round-trip including the subway so $195 for the whole group

up to you

Every place I%26#39;ve looked shows a roundtrip fare of $9/person from Port Authority to Meadowlands. Perhaps the fare has gone up?

With 15, I would contact Crown limo (or another co.) and see what the cost of a stretch limo would be.
