How to ride the subway:

The subway runs 24-7-365 and is very safe. Of course, one should use common sense and always keep a good handle on personal belongings, money, cameras, etc. Don%26#39;t keep your wallet in your back pants pocket, etc.
You can use Hop-Stop to find subway and bus directions:

It would help to know how old you are, where you%26#39;re staying, and what kind of shopping/night spots you%26#39;re looking for.
One thing I will say, though, that if you plan on having dinner all 8 of you I would try to get a reservation, especially if you%26#39;re going to a popular place.
For clothes shopping you could check out NoLiTa and SoHo. NoLiTa (North of Little Italy) is around Mott, Mulberry, and Elizabeth and has a lot of nice, smaller boutiques. Tends to be pricy. SoHo has a wider variety, but also has some chains, which could be fun if they%26#39;re different from what you have in MS (ex., H%26amp;M, which is good for cheap and trendy). For high-end department stores there%26#39;s Bergdorf%26#39;s, Bendel%26#39;s, and Barney%26#39;s. Mid-range Bloomingdale%26#39;s and Lord %26amp; Taylor%26#39;s (L%26amp;T has good sales and is more spacious--can%26#39;t tell you about Macy%26#39;s b/c I think it%26#39;s a zoo and I rarely go).
