visiting nyc next week fir 1st time. have tickets to see rent on thurs nite and phantom on fri nite. debating on whether to have dinner before or after the musicals..if before, how early should we book reservations, and any suggestions to reasonable restaraunts close to musicals. thanks
dinner before broadway musicals or afterHaven%26#39;t been to Broadway yet (roll on Jan) but when we go to the West End in London we generally have a late lunch then eat after the theatre. Having said that we normally stay out for a while after so we don%26#39;t go to bed on a full stomach.
Eating before the theatre means a very early dinner, if you go for this option seek light snacks afterwards.
dinner before broadway musicals or afterI always opt for eating after the show. Doing so before is too rushed, and a full stomach may make you tired during the performance.
Also, theatre district restaurants are much more lively and festive after a performance And it gives you something to look forward to after the curtain goes down.
Just have a snack before the show to tide you over.
We wanted to get a reservation at Joe Allen before the show but couldnt so we waited until after the show and just walked straight in. I can highly recommend this place for pre or post theatre dining, excellent food, service and atmosphere.
my new york transplant friend would concur that joe allen%26#39;s after the show is a great place to go. sometimes you%26#39;ll see a star or two. if you are going with a group, or family, i would recommend carmines for family style eating. we had a great time there although we had to settle for a %26#39;lupper%26#39; reservation (lunch-supper 3:30 meal). surprisingly this worked out well giving us time to digest and wander before the show. (saw RENT as well)
I always eat a light meal before a show, otherwise my tummy would make too much noise. It%26#39;s different on vacation, when you can sleep late though. I go to the theater during a work week, so I%26#39;ve got to rush home afterward and go to sleep.
You should absolutely make reservations, either pre- or apres-theater.
we usually eat before a nite show since most shows are over 10PM or later and since we live in the suburbs of NYC it takes about an hour to get home. This is one reason I love matinees then we eat at 5-5:30 and still get home at a reasonable hour
Nevre been to Joe Allens but have eaten on 46 St where there are many good restaurants
If you eat before, book at 6 or so. I also prefer eating after but have a light snack before or late afternoon. One nice idea is have a fancy afternoon tea at about 4 at one of the better hotels (the St. Regis has a nice one) and then eat after the show. Joe Allen%26#39;s already mentioned is on ';restaurant row'; where there are lots of other good choices from casual (Hourglass Tavern) to fancier (Orso and Lattanzi for Italian) to inbetween (Becco for pasta). John%26#39;s pizzeria is another popular theater district place in a converted church.
