There are thousands of restaurants. Everyone%26#39;s got a different opinion. Mixed reviews on Tao.

I would say for what you requested:

Asiate in the Mandarin Oriental- excellent Asian/French fusion with outstanding views you can%26#39;t replicate anywhere else. In the Time Warner building at Columbus Circle

Spice Market, a Thai/fusion place in the very trendy meatpacking district on the edge of Greenwich Village.

Balthazar-casual but very trendy French brasserie in Soho. (good for breakfast, lunch or dinner)

L%26#39;Impero for fantastic Italian near the UN in midtown.

These places are all relatively expensive but Asiate and L%26#39;Impero, the 2 most expensive have very good value prix fixe lunches. Balthazar is a hot place and hard to book but easy for breakfast. They have their own in house bakery.

Thai: Pongsri 106 Bayard St (Chinatown location is the best one but can go to 244 W 48th St in midtown), Pam%26#39;s Real Thai 404 W 49th St.

Asian: Asiate in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Very good Asian/Japanese/fusion with a magnificent view. Hard to get a dinner reservation so go for lunch, when I think the view is just good or better. In the worse case, have lunch in the bar. Nobu.

French: Le Bernardin, Jean-Georges, Cafe des Artistes

Italian: Beppe 45 E 22nd St, www.babbonyc.com

~bon appetit~

Forgot one thing. The hottest restaurant trend in NY is Japanese. So perhaps you should give Nobu or Bond Street a look. Also hot are Korean and Vietnamese cuisines. Two places.
