To say ';Hi'; and ask about Tag Heuer

Hi everyone! This is my first post although I have been ';lurking'; for some time.

My wife and I are planning our first trip to NYC and I%26#39;m sure we will have plenty of questions over the next few months. We are planning on visiting in May for 10 nights and are really looking forward to it.

We have picked up loads of great tips from this forum but one thing I haven%26#39;t found out about are wristwatches. I fancy treating myself and quite like the Tag Heuer range. Where would be the best place to get a good deal on one. I don%26#39;t want to buy a fake or replica, I want the real thing. I have seen lots of online shops with good deals but it doesn%26#39;t look like you can go in person and buy face to face.

I know that if I buy in NYC I will have to pay sales tax but how much? How about if I bought in NJ is there less tax to pay there? Sorry for the basic tax questions but over here in the UK the tax is already added so the price you see is what you pay.

Thanks in advance for any answers. :)

Actually, someone asked this question a while ago

and I did a websearch and found a forum like this about watches.

You might want to post your question there because I think the best scenario would be finding a discount retailer in New Jersey, close enough to NYC to make sense. I don%26#39;t know who/where that would be.

Searching that forum though, I discovered someone said Fortunoff gives a 20% discount on all Swiss watches. But it also sounds as though you can negotiate that same discount at other shops.

The 2 major watch retailers in Manhattan are Tourneau with 3 locations and Wempe on Fifth Ave. %26amp; 55 st. Fortunoff is just 1 block away on Fifth %26amp; 54 st and is a very well regarded jewelry store. Both Macy%26#39;s and Bloomingdales also carry Tag Heuer and both stores offer foreigners an 11% discount on most merchandise (not sure about watches) if you register at their service desk with proof that you live elsewhere.

Yes, it%26#39;s also true if you buy in New Jersey you avoid sales tax which is 8.375. So as I said to start, ideally you should go to NJ and find a discount retailer there.

There is an outlet mall called Woodbury Commons about an hour+ away from NYC (bus from Port Authority) that has a Tag Heuer store, but I think they carry older, and some discontinued models. The bus is $25-37/person to get there. You really have to decide how much trouble you want to go to to get the best deal. It also sounds like lots of people here buy online since you can save quite a bit.

Thanks for the reply. As we could do some other shopping in NJ it might be worth a trip out there. Do many New Yorkers go there to shop and save on the sales tax?

Before you trot off to New Jersey to save tax, take a look at this dealer%26#39;s offerings and call them when you get here.

They often offer product at discount, and they are in an interesting part of town ( the financial district. ) Most important is that they are reputable.

Happy hunting from a watch collector.

Joe in NYC

I think some do, yes. The issue is time and cost of transportation vs. what you save. There are both Bloomingdales %26amp; Macy%26#39;s in New Jersey but I don%26#39;t know if they offer the foreigner%26#39;s discount in those stores (or whether it%26#39;s good in the NYC stores on watches). You could spend time %26amp; money to go and find you%26#39;re saving 8+% tax but losing the 11% discount that the NY stores offer.

The tag heuer website lists retailers by state.

I also forgot to mention they have their own store in downtown Manhattan (Soho).

Thanks for the info guys! I%26#39;m going to look at all the options and then make a short list of reputable dealers to visit. I wouldn%26#39;t make a special trip out to NJ just for a watch but if there were some other sites to see and shops to visit then it would be an option.

I bought a Tag Heuer watch at their store in Woodbury Common at about a 25 percent discount. See link below for Woodbury:

We were planning on going out to Woodbury Common so I must call in the shop there.

Thanks for the info.

Andy.
