Affordable Accommodation NYC

I got a recommendation through the forums here to check out the company NY Habitat for a short term apartment sublet. http://www.nyhabitat.com. We were somewhat skeptical about this company, especially when we learned we had to give a $500 security deposit in CASH. But it worked out fine.

We stayed in an apartment they recommended for 3 nights during the Thanksgiving holiday. It was a tiny studio apartment in the Clinton area of Manhattan (formerly known as Hell%26#39;s Kitchen). It was in a great location and perfect for our needs. It had a murphy bed, small kitchen, closet to hang our stuff, was in walking distance to the subway. It was really affordable for us-- $115 a night including taxes and the rental fee-- and considering the going rate for a Manahattan hotel was $250 and up, it was a godsend.

Just wanted to let everyone know about this place. I%26#39;m sure not all the apartments are perfect, but it worked for us. A good alternative to expensive hotels.

That sounds almost too good to be true. Glad you were lucky.

By the way, it%26#39;s still called Hell%26#39;s Kitchen.

Thanks so much for posting back. Sooo glad it worked out well for you. Did you know about the security deposit ahead of time? Would they have taken the deposit on a credit card???

Just out of curiousity, since this appears to be your first post, how is it you got the recommendation here? Were you posting under a different name or did you just see the co. mentioned to someone else on this board?

I saw the recommendation posted elsewhere on this forum. I had been reading the posts about NYC accommodations. And no, they wouldn%26#39;t take a credit card for the deposit. Once you choose an apartment and pay the search fee to NY Habitat (they take a percentage of the total rent), the rest of the transaction is done directly with the apartment owner. I did know about the security deposit ahead of time. You sign a lease, just like for a normal apartment. I don%26#39;t know if everyone requires cash for the security deposit, but this person did. You get the deposit back when you leave, assuming the apartment is in good shape and everything is accounted for.

Do you have any pics of or a link to this apartment? I%26#39;m currently looking for somewhere to stay...

Thanks!

Loid, if you contact nyhabitat.com they will likely send you photos of any apts. they have available for your dates. Another apt. co. that%26#39;s gotten pretty good feedback is citylightsnewyork.com
