Is 42nd St Photo a reputable store to buy camera equipment?

I remember the old 42nd Street Photo which I had thought went out of business a few years ago. Not sure if this is the same outfit or new business using old name. Thanks.

Perhaps you are thinking of 47th St. Photo, which went into bankrupcy several years ago. It is hard to keep track of photo places, as some of them go out of business and then are reincarnated under another name. (However, among the many names used by this outfit has been ';47 St. Audio %26amp; Photo';. I would be careful about shopping at unknown photo places in New York (especially the tourist traps along Fifth Avenue). I also would try to check out an unknown place on-line with the Better Business Bureau of New York. Even better is dealing with places that are members of the BBB. This way, if there is a complaint, the firm has agreed to abide by the rulings of a BBB hearing officer. I have been very happy with B%26amp;H Photo. Check out there BBB rating at bbbnewyork.org/businessreports/default.aspx鈥?/a>

NYCJerry: you%26#39;re right. It was 47th St. Photo. Thanks.

The recommendations you got in response to your earlier post were excellent, and I recommend you take another look at them. Are you new to New York?

No. I%26#39;m not new. I%26#39;ve been around NYC for about 20 years. I use the forum to check where people are going, eating, buying, etc., particularly areas that I%26#39;m not familiar with (e.g. purchasing photography equipment). Thanks. It%26#39;s a great resource.

If buying photo equipment is new for you, you might also want to do a little light reading before you go to the store -- like ';Consumer Reports'; or its most recent annual buying guide, and maybe some of the photo magazines. That will help you sort out not only what equipment is recommended by others, but also the types of features availble on the equipment and which features you do or do not want.

If you%26#39;ve been here for 20 years, I%26#39;m frankly a bit surprised you don%26#39;t have more knowledge of the electronic stores -- simply because there have been so many scams, disreputable dealers, bankruptcies, etc. that got a lot of media coverage. But maybe you don%26#39;t watch TV or read the paper, which is probably not such a bad idea.

In the past I%26#39;ve gone to 47th Street (when it was open) and B%26amp;H more recently. My wife is a photographer so the research part has been taken care of. I did a search on bizrate.com and 42nd Street popped up with good reviews and a great price on the item I was looking to buy. But, as you pointed out, I%26#39;m familiar with the scams so I was curious if anyone else had any good (or bad) experience with this store. (People posting on this forum are a great source of information!)

I do read the papers (internet version and blogs) but don%26#39;t watch much tv. ;)

I wouldn%26#39;t touch t42nd with a bargepole. I went in there last year and they tried to rip me off. The prices do not match their internet site and when asked, they became rude and abusive.

If you want range then use B%26amp;H. If J%26amp;R stock what you want then use them. Both stores are totally reputable, but the free tourist magazines carry a $10 or $15 voucher for J%26amp;R.

During my working days I was a professional photographer and after 47st Photo went under I became a die-hard B%26amp;H fan.

They always had what I needed, many times I got next day delivery, no additional charge and they had the best prices in the City.

Give them a try, you will be pleasantly surprised.

As for 42nd St photo, one of the biggest tourist traps in town. AVOID like the plague!!!!!!!!

Poppa

B%26amp;H is truly my favorite. My coworkers and I swear by it.
