Hi,
Have been Seriously considering moving to NY in the next 6 months or so, would be looking to be there for a year or 2.
Im 25 and work in advertising, what would my chances of getting a visa be? Ive checked a few websites about it but it does seem difficault to move out there.
Anyone on this board that has done it before that can give me an advice?
Thanks
Moving to NY
Hi Bob
You should have a look on www.askanewyorker.com there is quite a lot of info there about relocating to NYC. Hope this helps Elle ;-)
Moving to NY
Hiya Bob~
If you would be working for an American Branch of the company you are already working for, it shouldn%26#39;t be too hard.
If not, then I%26#39;m pretty sure you already have to have a job lined up to get a work visa.
Check the website of the American State Dep%26#39;t and the U.S. Immigration and Nationalization Service for more detailed information.
Be prepared for rents even higher than one in London could imagine, and I know rents in London are depressingly high.
I hate to suggest this, but you could do as the Irish seem to be doing quite well and come over as a tourist and just overstay your visit. You%26#39;d have to work black, but it could lead to something down the way. Not that I know of anyone personally doing this, of course...
Cheers,
Dev.
I have researched this before myself.
Basically the only way is as the previous posters have said - you need a job lined up before you leave the UK.
If your parents are British you cannot even take part in the visa lottery.
The only other option I can see is marriage!
Why cannot the British partake of the visa lottery. Sounds a bit unfair to me. We let every Tom, D*ck and Harry, from every mud hut in the world partake, but not the Brits. Doesn%26#39;t sound right!
Cheers,
Dev
ps. Would you believe they sent this back to me because of a profanity: The nickname for Richard?
Your best bet is to ask your co. to transfer you if they%26#39;re willing or, try another co. in London and tell them you want to be posted in NYC. That said, the business in NYC is going through tough times with lots of layoffs. It%26#39;s not a simple thing to do at all UNLESS you do something extraordinary that few others do.
Btw, Devlin is wrong, rents in NYC are not higher than London, especially if you factor in the conversion rate. NYC is MUCH less expensive. What is true is the salary generally earned by a 25 yr old (in dollars) doesn%26#39;t go very far. Many young people share apts or live outside Manhattan. The best scenario would be to get paid in British pounds while working here. Nice work if you can get it.
Btw, I can%26#39;t imagine why you%26#39;d be surprised that this is a difficult thing to do when it is next to impossible for an American to do the same thing in reverse.
Dearest NYWhiz~
Regardless of what conversion rates you use, or on what other criterion you base your opinion, I STILL think rents in NY are higher than London. I%26#39;m from NY and still have friends living there, so I know what they pay, especially the ones who didn%26#39;t luck into Grannie%26#39;s Rent-Controlled apartment. Over the years, I%26#39;d considered moving to our NY Office, or one of our European Offices. I was astounded at how high the rents were in most European capitals, especially London, but I still came away thinking NY was higher.
I never claimed to be infallable, but I still believe my opinion to be true. Why make such a schtunk over an opinion? Remember the saying about opinions...?
Even if I am wrong, why make such a migillah?
And as to why I%26#39;m surprised it is so difficult for a Brit to get a visa to come here, the subject never arose as it applies to me. I am a dual Irish/American citizen and can work in any EU country. I never imagined it would be difficult for other people to work in other countries. Thank you for enlightening me on this subject. But, it could have been done in a more civil manner.
Well, much as it pains me to tear myself away, I must.
Cheers,
Dev
Dearest Devlin. You may THINK it%26#39;s more expensive in NYC, but it%26#39;s not. I have not yet found a cost comparison on apartments, but this link will show London is now the 3rd most expensive city in which to live and NYC ranks 13.

The other comment was not directed at you but the OP.
My Dear Whiz~
What is this compulsion you feel to always put down others. One does not make himself look more intelligent by putting down others. It only makes him look sad. :o(
Now that you%26#39;ve found some research and statistics to prove you right, do you feel better?
There are a lot of variables in those numbers though, whether or not you are using US Currency at the exchange rate, or whether you are using the native currency. On what basis are the statistics based, currency conversion or comparable worth? Either way, I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll find some way to battle me, so let%26#39;s just leave it, shall we?
Good to see you humor hasn%26#39;t changed from its usual bilious norm. Constants are comforting.
Cheers,
Dev
