Suggestions on wear to buy a dress in Soho, East Village or...

For the holiday%26#39;s I plan to give my wife a dress from any store she wants. She%26#39;s in her early 40s and likes high-end clothing although she doesn%26#39;t have the opportunity to wear it often (that%26#39;s the other part of the gift...creating a special occasion to wear THE dress). I%26#39;m looking for suggestions on dress shops/clothing stores in SoHo, East Village and the Lower East Side. Since I%26#39;m paying I want to steer her somewhere cutting edge something she probably wouldn%26#39;t consider if she was paying. I%26#39;m looking for something in the $500 range for special occasions (black cocktail dress?). Thank you.

Have been thinking about your request and I just don%26#39;t think I know enough of the smaller downtown stores to give a good suggestion.

Scoop might have some things but they carry more casual than dressy things (I think most of the downtown stores do). Yigal Azourel (designer) might be an option. He has his own boutique but is also carried at Intermix, Bloomingdales in Soho and uptown at Saks.

I think Barney%26#39;s would be the best bet and they%26#39;ll have a big sale right after Xmas. At least this tops your post.

Barney%26#39;s is a great idea! Bloomies in Soho is not stocked that well, last I checked, but the dress dept. on 59th St Bloomies is amazing!! Loehmann%26#39;s is pretty good, too. Of course there is always Lord and Taylor, too. Saks is way too expensive, IMO.

In Soho, you can try Nicole Miller or BCBG, but they are definitely geared toward the younger crowd. You probably won%26#39;t find the classic little black dress there.
