Transportation from NYC to Cooperstown & back

My boyfriend and I will be going to New York City for about a week next week and we%26#39;d like to squeeze in a trip to Cooperstown since he is a huge baseball fan. I%26#39;ve done some research and there doesn%26#39;t seem to be a bus or train that will take you directly from NYC to Cooperstown so we figure its best to just rent a car. We are from Los Angeles and our concern is driving in snow since neither one of us has ever driven in snow. Is it snowing heavily around the area and are chains necessary? Will a rental car company provide you with chains for the tires if the snow is heavy? Thanks! :) Happy Holidays!

I think it probably is best to rent a car as well. I don%26#39;t see any heavy snow in next week%26#39;s forecast so chains won%26#39;t be necessary.

That said, the HoF website says that Trailways does have bus service to Cooperstown from NYC

The online schedule for http://www.trailwaysny.com does not list Cooperstown, but they do have a bus depot there

so they must have bus service there.

hmmm, I just checked on http://www.greyhound.com - and they too run to Cooperstown.

Good luck.

Transportation from NYC to Cooperstown %26amp; back

Thanks for the links and weather info. I think we will end up driving to Cooperstown and here is our plan. We%26#39;ll be arriving Wed afternoon to NYC check into our hotel, get something to eat, whatever. We are thinking of driving out there Thursday morning in a rental, checking out the Baseball Hall of Fame (its open from 9-5pm), and heading back to NYC that same day. It seems like a busy day, but we don%26#39;t want to reserve anything in Cooperstown in case we don%26#39;t end up going and we don%26#39;t want to pay for a night in our NYC hotel if we won%26#39;t be spending the night there, so we think our best bet now is to go and come back in one day and still have our NYC hotel to come back to that night. Any input on this itinerary would be much appreciated. My concern is that Cooperstown will look beautiful covered in snow and that we will regret rushing through it in one day. Its been 70-80 degrees in Los Angeles and we really want to see a snowy Christmas and we think Cooperstown might be our only chance too since its our detour from NYC. Thanks for any advice and Merry Christmas!

according to Mapqest, the trip should take you about 4 hours (230 miles)

sometimes upstate NY will get snow even if the city doesn%26#39;t

Oh lordy! Please don%26#39;t use MapQuest!!! It has a very high rate of inaccuracy. Instead, use Yahoo maps. Even tourism folks at NY Thruway rest stops hate MapQuest.

Or, if you belong to AAA, order FREE maps and guidebooks from them. Very accurate. You can also plan a ';Triptik'; on-line or at your local AAA office. Did I mention they are free?

Use this website for very inexpensive, all-inclusive car rental:

www.whizzcarrental.com

Very reliable. They sub-contract to big chains, like Alamo, National, etc.

For weather, see this website:

www.wunderground.com

For more great and helpful info about Upstate New York, get free maps and info mailed to you from this website:

www.iloveny.com

Yahoo maps says 4hr11min

it%26#39;s just to give a rough idea of length of drive; for accurate directions I use maps; belong to AAA myself

Nothing personal, broadwaynyc. You are always very helpful. MapQuest simply has steered me wrong - literally - too many times! AAA maps rule!
