Hampton Inn times square north or the Avalon

Family of four planning a trip for the summer. Seem to have it narrowed down to these two, as they seem to have good reviews and are reasonably priced. Would appreciate any feedback on these. Looks like the we could have a junior suite at the Avalon or two doubles at the Hampton. The Avalon looks to be about $50/night more. Thanks for any help.

The Avalon is under new management and they%26#39;ve had some union issues. Some of the workers were on strike. The Hampton Inn is newly renovated.

I would actually suggest checking the Salisbury which is closer to Central Park, has kitchenettes, is a nicer area for kids imo and should be around the same price. They have a breakfast you can buy for $3/person plus you have your own kitchen for breakfast/kunch/snacks in. I picked an arbitrary date in July and found a price of $172 on quikbook (less than the hotel%26#39;s own website price of $190).

I also think you should consider the Beacon on the upper westside, another great all suite hotel in a great location for families. The Excelsior is another nice hotel in that area (not all suite) and is listed on quikbook for %166/night for a double double.

Thanks NY whiz I will look into these. My wife and I were in NY last year and now want to show our boys 15 %26amp;17 all the places we visited and loved. We stayed at the Shelbourne murray hill, was great for the two of us but is very pricey for 4.

I%26#39;m staying at the Hampton Inn Times Sq as we speak and it is a really good hotel for the price. The rooms are clean and have everything you need. The breakfast is awesome! Eggs/waffles/biscuits/cereal/danishes/fruit. That will save you probably $30 each day right there. I would stay here again. The location is perfect too. Close to all the tourist spots and there is a subway entrance right across the street.

With teens, they would like the Times Square area. I just wonder about getting a regular room. Are these boys going to share a bed? I%26#39;d try to go for a suite. Look at the Affinia Manhattan. It%26#39;s owned by the same co. as the Shelburne but nearer Times Square. A 1 bedroom suite could yield 2 queen beds in the bedroom and a queen sofabed in the living room.

Another idea is the Best Western President. They have 2 bedroom suites (and I think a breakfast included).

If you%26#39;re not worried about a regular room, the Hampton Inn sounds good.

Thanks for the great advice. NY whiz you have touched on a bit of a problem. As the boys are getting older it is more difficult to have them share a bed that size as they are both over 6%26#39; tall. I agree a suite would be better, I am eager to look into your suggestions....maybe xmas day after all the morning activity, merry xmas to all!!

Good morning and Merry Christmas wader. Just wanted to mention the Salisbury and the Beacon are also all suite hotels that have 1 bedroom apts. The Salisbury actually has some 2 bed/2 bath units (I think you have to phone to get them) but may be pricey.

Thanks again NY whiz (Bettina?) I have looked into all of the hotels you mention and the Salisbury looks great. Nice big suites at reasonable price and excellant location. Is there a subway entrance nearby?? Last time we traveled almost exclusively by subway (and on foot of course!! We figured about 80 miles in our 3 days!) At any rate after the holiday season we will finalize our plans and looks like the Salisbury will be our home for 5-6 days come July. Also planning a quick 2 day visit to Washington. So much history. Thanks again for all your help, I hope you and your family have a wonderful xmas and new year.

Just putting in my 2 cents. Just got back from staying at the Avalon Dec 18-21. They do have some union issues, but me and my teenage son stayed in a Junior Suite with 2 separate beds and we were fine, but for 4 people I would suggest the Affinia Manhatten. My brother in law just stayed there and he said it was spacious and nice for NYC standards. His even had a small kitchen. Also, if you have kids, try the Jekyll and Hyde club one night. My friend and I took our 2 boys and they loved it!! I think they have a website at Eerie.com. Our boys age 14-15 really liked NYC in general, but the highlights were Times Square and the club. Bottom line is the Avalon is ok and within walking distance to Times Square but the service is non existent with the Union issue. The Affinia didnt seem to have those issues, but may be a bit more expensive than the Avalon. The Avalon is very, very clean and beautiful with marble all over. Have fun!!

thanks msbailey, I just looked at their website and it does look interesting. What is it exactly, dinner with things going on around you?? A sit down show??
