There are new rates, in effect for now.

Manhattan is being divided into four zones. A ride within a zone is the ten dollar fare. However crossing over a zone will cost an additional five dollars. Going into an outer borough will also cost five dollars extra.
The zones are:
Zone A - South of 23rd Street in Manhattan;
Zone B - 23rd Street to 60th Street in Manhattan;
Zone C - 60t Street to 96th Street in Manhattan;
Zone D - Manhattan north of 96th Street.
So for example, a ride from lower Manhattan to Harlem would cost 25 dollars - ten dollars as the initial drop - and the 15 dollars for crossing three zones.
The fares for the airport runs will remain the same.
Taxi inside Manhattan during transit strike
I was looking at this page (nyc.gov/html/鈥axi_fhv_rules.shtml) and it gives differenet prices for the airport runs. It also mentions per person rather than per car for all the journeys. Does anyone have any clarification on this ? Thanks.
Taxi inside Manhattan during transit strike
I may be wrong, but when I read it this morning, I got the impression it was per person. Keep in mind a driver may have 3 unrelated people picked up at three different spots and going to 3 different destinations. On the other hand, he could have a family of 3 going from point A to point B together, in which case I would probably try to negotiate the fare down a bit.
Thanks nycamb. Do you have any confirmation on the airport prices which are lower on that site I posted.
You could have 3 people going 5 or 6 blocks together within one zone end up with a $30 fare if it%26#39;s per person. Hopefully some high party official will clarify. Also, I%26#39;m not sure whether the temporary fares stated are mandatory, or just maximums.
I%26#39;m not quite sure what you mean about the airport fares, but the strike fares I%26#39;m seeing are $30 per person to JFK and $20 per person to LGA. Currently, as I recall, there is no fixed fare for LGA and, the last time I took one, the JFK fixed fare was about $40 per car before toll %26amp; tip. So, again, under this new structure, a taxi for a group of 3 or 4 paying per person would be a lot more expensive than under the normal per car rate. I would probably look into one of the ';black car'; car services; however, they may also be taking advantage of these new fares.
Am I reading this wrongly? It says on that site prices to/from Manhattan and JFK $30. I was reading this as being a fare from the airport as well.It%26#39;s normally $45 without tolls or is this site not for yellow cabs? I think I may be having a senior moment!
It%26#39;s normally $45 PER CAR from JFK before tolls and tip, no matter how many passengers.
But under the strike rule it will be $30 PER PERSON before tolls and tip. So if you%26#39;re traveling alone, that would be a great deal; however, I think they are counting on most, if not all, cabs being shared -- it may even be mandatory, I%26#39;m not sure. Or maybe for one person the old fare structure remains in effect.
For a family or other group of 3 or 4, this is not such a good deal. Again, I would probably try to negotiate. However, that might not work at the airport, where the driver could easily refuse and just take 3 or 4 unrelated people standing in line and willing to pay the full $30 each.
In any event, if you end up paying $90 or $120 for 3 or 4 people to take a cab from JFK, I would definitely not give a tip and I might refuse to pay the toll, as the normal fare for that would be about $60 including toll and tip.
It was the single traveller that I was thinking about, not my own journey when there will be 4 of us. I didn%26#39;t know if they could insist on a share scheme. I%26#39;ve been looking at online quotes for a car service which will be much cheaper..as long as they don%26#39;t raise their prices as well! Thanks for the help.
Will this be the same situation from Newark Airport?
