Hi there, I%26#39;m new to this forum, spend most of my time on the London forum, but thought I%26#39;d ask for some suggestions here.
My son and his wife will be visiting New York to attend a friends%26#39; wedding in April and the apartment they were hoping to share with friends has fallen through.
Budget is a very high priority, so I was wondering what the best options are for staying? Youth hostels, B%26amp;B or hotels? I%26#39;ve never been so don%26#39;t know.
The wedding is in the Manhattan area.
Thanks.

What does the Manhattan area mean??? It%26#39;s either in Manhattan or it%26#39;s not. That could make a big difference in where they stay. Please post where the wedding will be and how long they plan to stay. Also we need to know how much they want to pay/night.
If it%26#39;s just the 2 of them and they don%26#39;t mind staying in someone else%26#39;s apartment with them, citylightsnewyork does ';hosted'; apartments (you stay in someone%26#39;s apt. while they%26#39;re there but have your own bedroom and sometimes bathroom). Someone here originally posted about a wonderful experience staying with an English woman who lives in Murray Hill. That agency also has regular apartments as does nyhabit.
newyork.craigslist.com is a website where people post about renting their apt. if they%26#39;re going away etc. You really need to know areas etc. to do this imo.
For ';hostels';, the best is evidently Hostel International on the upper westside. The Westside ';Y'; (YMCA) and the Vanderbilt ';Y'; also get decent reviews and have some private rooms. hostelz.com is a website with reviews.
Second Home on Second is a good, inexpensive b %26amp; b, some rooms with private bath, others shared. Bed %26amp; Coffee is another. But it would really help to know where the wedding is, where their friends live etc.
Believe it or not New york can be enjoyed on a budget. Ok accomodations are not going to be in luxary, however, a roof over your head in an OK neighborhood isn%26#39;t asking to much. I am sure you can find hostels in New York I stayed at one called American Hostel on Amsterdam and 102nd and it was at a decent price and I felt safe at all times. In the general area is Newton Hotel which has gotten favorable reviews on these pages.
As far as getting around use the MTA subways, and or buses.
In Manhattan depending on your precise location the very same article you purchase will vary based on where you are. For example, lunch in a mid-town cafe may be double the price for the same meal on the upper west side etc.. if your on a real tight budget place yourself where you can perhaps save. Alot of things are not based on costs stroll throgh Central Park,(no admission charge) Numerous museums, some have no admission charges or a small one. Catch an off broadway theatrical show for a fraction of the cost. Student concerts are sometimes free all around town if you can find information on locations and dates.
China town grab a carry out meal for little.
Hang out in New Jersey for even lower prices -
That is one of the exciting things about Manhattan -that being how one survives, enjoys, entertains oneself the possibilities are endless and who can say who is right and or wrong.. Have Fun
Thanks so much for all of this, I%26#39;ll pass it on as well as this web site to them.
I just love Tripadvisor, it has always helped me so much with London, now I see you guys are just as great.
Many thanks.
The Newton Hotel is on the Upper West side on Broadway and 95th Street. It gets good reviews, especially for value. It is in a safe residential neighborhood with close by shops and good moderately priced restaurants. It is one block from the subway which can get you to midtown in 10 minutes and most anywhere in Manhattan in 30 minutes.
