Driving into NYC Christmas Weekend--close to impossible?

Hello,

How difficult would it be to drive into the city this weekend and stay in the Times Square area? We would be driving from Pennsylvania with 2 adults and 2 children.

Thank you!

I don%26#39;t think you should have a problem at all. I could be wrong, but I think if the strike continues, many people will stay away. If the strike is settled, I still think it won%26#39;t be too bad.

We%26#39;ve heard many of the streets are closed to vehicle traffic, is that true?

All the restrictions are for Mon-Fri 5am-8pm. They will not hold for Sat/Sun. Read info here

Here are the street restrictions, not many, but enough:

You%26#39;ll be able to get to your hotel.

The key is to start early - meaning SUPER EXTRA early! I%26#39;d hit the road by 5:30 AM from PA, and it should be smooth sailing. As long as you have 4 people in the car, you%26#39;ll be cleared to enter Manhattan.

I%26#39;ve been carpooling from Queens at 6:50 AM, and we have been zooming in!! Today it took a record-breaking 40 minutes! Yesterday%26#39;s ride home at 3:45 PM was also easy, but a little slower. People I know who started leaving after 8:30 AM were S.O.L.

Yes, some streets are closed, but many ';closed'; streets are being opened as they are deemed not necessary for closure. Alternate side of the street parking regualations are suspended, but you still need to feed the meters.

The real traffic jams start after 9 AM, and have been building to road-rage levels in the late afternoon. When we were headed home in the afternoon, we saw the in-bound roads and south-bound Manhattan streets jam packed with cars.

I%26#39;m a night owl (as are many NYers), but I%26#39;m adapting because it sure beats standing on a LIRR line for 2 hours in the freezing shade.

Just remember all the problems have been on work days. The weekend should be much, much better. I don%26#39;t think you NEED to start so early if you%26#39;re coming on Sat., but it would make things easier.
