We are planning a trip to NYC next week. Staying in midtown. If there is a transit strike: Will we be able to get a cab from JFK? Will we be able to get around OK, or will it be impossible to get a cab? Will people be staying out of the city? Should we cancel our trip? I%26#39;m hoping this may be an oportunity for seeing some good shows @ a discount.
transit strike
You will be limited, of course, but you will still be able to walk around and get taxis. Manhattan is very easy to get around on foot - just read some of the recent trip reports, especially mick67%26#39;s!! One person said they were walking 10 miles a day - and that%26#39;s with the subway working! You will be able to see many sights.
There will be taxis from JFK but traffic will be sssllllooowww.....be patient and readjust your expectations accordingly.
Bundle up good, no matter what. Wear layers and comfortable walking shoes. Wear a hat that covers your ears, gloves, and a scarf that you can wrap around your neck, nose and mouth.
People in NYC come together and cooperate amazingly quickly when coping with disasters and bizarre obstacles. In case there is a strike, I bet you%26#39;ll see a lot of cooperation and
A strike looks likely, but maybe it will be a short one!
transit strike
well, it%26#39;s past midnight and they are still working, so that is a good sign.
4:24 am and we are still ';dodging a bullet'; on this one..........They%26#39;re still talking. All I need them to do is keep talking til at least 6pm when I get home.......Then I am off to ARizona for two weeks.
I had bought a R/T railroad ticket in advance, just in case, as I was planning a LONG, DARK, LONELY, and as it turns out WET, walk to Forest Hills at 5am.....dont have to do it now. Only a SHORT, Dark, Lonely Wet walk to the subway!!!!!
6:23 AM - Still no strike, still no contract. I%26#39;m going to work today - hope I can get home!
Stay dry!
OK, Now what? Looks like the TWU is going to do this in stages. I%26#39;m thinking this won%26#39;t interrupt my plans too much, as long as I can get a cab from JFK to Midtown on Tues. and back on Sat.. I%26#39;d still like to see what you think about the impact this might have on ticket availability for shows, and diminished crowds in the city.
Believe me, if people have tickets to shows, they will come!
As for diminished crowds, don%26#39;t count on that at all.
It%26#39;s the Christmas/Hanukkah season and it%26#39;s NYC.
People who visit NYC are resourcful and will use any means possible to get where they want, strike or no strike.
You should have no problem with taxis at the airport. Once you are in Manhattan - you will probably walk everywhere, so the strike, if there is one, won%26#39;t affect you. Make sure you bring comfy shoes. I wouldn%26#39;t cancel your trip - you can still have a great time!!!
Thanks! I really appreciate the feedback.
The union is still threatening a strike but not until Monday.
Don%26#39;t postpone your trip. If you%26#39;re staying in a midtown hotel you can walk - which is the best way to get around. Dress warm! No one will be staying out of the city, strike or no strike.
You%26#39;ll have no trouble getting a cab from JFK.
Get your theater tickets at TKTS in Times Square. They sell tickets to shows for that same day at half price (you can%26#39;t always get the show you want, though) and they only accept cash - no credit cards. And don%26#39;t be put off by the long lines - once it opens up the line moves pretty fast.
